The Master of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Technical Management was created at the request of a team of industry leaders who identified a shortage of engineering leaders in their companies who also had the strategic and tactical skills to fully understand the business environment. This program will prepare you to move to the next level in technical human resources management with a deep understanding of the technical and business aspects of leading technical programs, departments, or a company.

The Master of Engineering and Technical Management program is a part-time program that lasts 21 months and is primarily taught online. At the beginning of each academic year, students are required to attend a one-week residency at Texas A&M University. Students will return home to complete all other courses online. This allows students to join the Master of Engineering Management program while continuing to work full-time.

How does the Master of Engineering and Technology Management (METM) degree compare to a Master of Science (MS) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree?

Our METM degree is different from traditional MS in Engineering or MBA degrees. We cater to technical professionals who want to develop their leadership skills and business knowledge. The focus is on business topics combined with technical and engineering context, as well as leadership skills. Our program focuses on industry best practices rather than research.

METM courses are taught by industry professionals and focus on real-world best practices. Participants will learn how to manage people, projects, and profitability. Your classmates will be working in leading engineering and technology companies and will have a technical background, just like you.
